ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the trajectory of international solidarity activity with those demanding democracy and rule of law in Turkey over a five-year period, from the Gezi protests in the summer of 2013 until the summer of 2018, that is, two years after the failed coup attempt of 15 July 2016. It provides a grounded explanation for the ‘internationalisation’ of support to the Gezi movement taking into account the global reflection of socio-political developments during the 2000s in Turkey. The chapter concludes by presenting the challenges that such international solidarity with Turkey faced in the post-2016 period, when the cognitive and normative certainties of the Gezi protests period gave their place to ethical puzzles and political aporias.
