ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I will discuss how writing and performing poetry can have powerful therapeutic effects on the writer/performer. Using scientific knowledge, for example, quoting the Pennebaker model of writing for therapy, and examples from my work (I take poetry as therapy into closed spaces like secure units, prisons, and for marginalised groups), I will discuss how creativity and advocacy helps the individual. I will also discuss the trend of more Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) poets and performers carving out a niche and entering the mainstream.
