This chapter examines a brief background to spoken word in print and the decision taken by Clive Birnie to set up Burning Eye Books. In discussion with Lucy English, Birnie explores the progress of spoken word publishing and how this has established the status of poetry in performance as worthy of as much serious critique as established printed poetry, and how audiences no longer distinguish between page and performance.
