ABSTRACT

Spoken word culture has been affected by post-industrial upheaval, and functions as a form of working-class activism. This co-authored chapter has an interdisciplinary approach to this investigation. Francis sets out the critical and cultural context for this work, while Purshouse provides ethnographic, personal-essay focused insight.

Tracing contemporary spoken word from 1960s Liverpool poets to present day hip-hop inspired works, we will investigate how notable writers reacted to Britain’s changing landscape and socio-politics.
