ABSTRACT

Though technology and social media are relatively new channels for communicating, the global COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 clearly highlights their use to communicate risk during a sticky crisis. This chapter explores some of the opportunities and challenges by focusing on published research, practice-based examples, and food for thought about future research and applications. With the plethora of technological affordances available for risk and crisis communication, this chapter primarily focuses on smartphones, social media, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things. We highlight what is known, and not yet known, with the goal of inciting readers to explore the possibilities around information seeking and sharing and teaching and learning, as well as in and around citizen journalism, civil protests, and social movements.
