ABSTRACT

Collaboration has become an expected component to research endeavors, yet teaming requires specific attention to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for successful collaboration. Implementation of strategies for successful collaboration is particularly important for applied research collaborations. Applied research involving school- and child-focused topics brings multi-system, multi-stakeholder, and cross-developmental factors that fall outside of the direct control of the research team, presenting unique additional challenges to collaboration. Although extension of research on effective teaming to applied research collaboration is limited to date, we presented strategies for addressing the challenges by drawing from bodies of work in team science and community-engaged research. Specifically, the 3Cs (coordination, communication, and cooperation) were discussed as transportable competencies that apply to any team. In addition, strategies from research-practitioner partnerships were offered for addressing the additional complexities associated with school- and child-focused research collaboration. Key resources to support team functions were provided to facilitate effective applied research teaming.
