ABSTRACT

This chapter uses Hays’ ADDRESSING framework to guide clinical sport psychology practitioners and researchers in the identification and understanding of cultural identities. Specifically, we adapt the framework to include age, disability, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, indigenous heritage, and gender. By examining cultural identity through these broadly applicable categories, Hays’ model can help clinical sport psychologists organize information concerning the diverse populations involved in sport. The chapter also considers research regarding the psychological effects of marginalization and discrimination among athletes. Although sport psychology researchers have gleaned useful information regarding the clinical consequences of marginalization and the intersection of different aspects of cultural identity and oppression, additional research is needed regarding these experiences and the influence they exert on athlete well-being and performance.
