ABSTRACT

Impression management is a variable that is commonly studied and conceptualized in psychological assessment methodology. To date, there are minimal studies that investigate the impact that impression management has on the self-report of mental health symptoms in athletes. Athletes may be particularly susceptible to engage in impression management on psychological assessment measures due to the stigma of mental health in athletics and the manners in which symptoms are screened in sports medicine contexts. In this chapter, we review definitions of impression management, studies of impression management to date, and provide examples of impression management in athletes. We highlight the importance of being aware of impression management in psychological assessment and screening with athletes.
