ABSTRACT

As an emerging field, clinical sport psychology has defined several areas where additional research is warranted. New, specialized screening tools and assessment norms as well as interventions tailored to the specific needs of athletes and coaches are just two of the many promising areas for clinical research. In addition, there is considerable information to be gathered regarding the epidemiology of psychological distress in athletes and other sport populations. Although researchers have made valuable contributions to the understanding, assessment, and treatment of athlete mental health across the brief history of clinical sport psychology, the future of the field depends on the development of sustained investigation of athlete mental health and the unique risk factors that arise in sport contexts. In addition, the field could benefit from the identification and publication of best practices, especially those associated with coordinated multidisciplinary care. The formation of a professional organization that can facilitate information sharing and inform directors of training programs in relevant fields would also be a beneficial development.
