ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the prevalence rates and risk factors for depression in athletes. Research on the prevalence of depression in athletes across demographic categories is presented, including differences in depression prevalence by gender. Studies comparing prevalence rates for depression among athletes to those found in non-athlete populations are also considered. In addition, the discussion of risk factors examines several concerns that are unique to the athlete population: type of sport, injury (including concussion), performance-related stressors, and career termination. A cognitive-behavioral framework is used to conceptualize the ways that each of these risk factors may contribute to the development of depression in athlete populations. Finally, suggestions and potential directions for future research regarding athlete depression are discussed.
