ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of anxiety within sport contexts, highlighting the variety of ways anxiety can present among athlete populations. It summarizes research on anxiety in the clinical and athletic realms, contributing factors of sport-related anxiety, clinician competency, and suggestions for future research. It offers an understanding and conceptualization of anxiety disorders as well as models and antecedents of anxiety as it relates to sport performance. Utilizing these theories can assist a clinician in understanding the etiology of an athlete’s anxiety to more effectively tailor treatment interventions. Future research that further explores anxiety disorders among athletes can help clinicians work toward maximizing not only an athlete’s performance in sport but also mental wellness outside of sport.
