ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on IRE in Greece, addressing the current debates and the processes of reform and transformation that have been taking place in recent years. The aim is first to present IRE in Western Thrace, with a focus on the way Islam is taught in minority schools, madrasas, and state schools. Second, a brief presentation of how Islam is taught in both Greek primary and secondary state schools is provided – an issue which raises questions about human rights, teaching methodology, and intercultural education. Finally, the chapter considers higher education and the introduction of an undergraduate programme of Islamic Studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
