ABSTRACT

This chapter develops the research framework of the volume. It is argued that the link between discourse and emotion provides a promising way to theorize and empirically analyse power relationships in IR. It carves out three research criteria for studying the power of emotions in world politics, which revolve around theory (what is an emotion?), expression (how are emotions expressed?), and effects (what do emotions do?), thus preparing the ground for the subsequent contributions in this volume. Two conceptions of emotional intersubjectivity are theorized: feeling rules and feeling structures. The chapter concludes by presenting the methodology and organization of the volume.
