ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys the work of Arthur Lewis from both a theoretical and empirical point of view across the entire span of his career. Special attention is paid to the celebrated 1954 article on ‘Economic Development with Unlimited Supplies of Labor’, the 1955 treatise on ‘The Theory of Economic Growth’, the 1969 Wicksell Lectures on ‘Aspects of Tropical Trade 1883–1965’, and the 1978 ‘Growth and Fluctuations 1870–1913’.
