ABSTRACT

Drawing upon the interdisciplinary field of food studies, this inquiry presents activities and materials for elementary students and work toward a more elaborate understanding of Iraqi society to increase cultural competence. Included formative performance tasks examine the significance of food’s relationship to geography, religion, culture, and society in Iraq. This inquiry outlines engagement with maps to teach key geographic features of Iraq, research of Iraqi foods and the design of a product label to display key research findings, and exploration of connections between Iraqi culture and its food traditions, specifically through the example of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
