ABSTRACT

This inquiry provides an example for teaching how the Cold War was perceived from often overlooked perspectives. The inquiry requires that students investigate global perspectives on this topic by using critical analysis strategies when examining primary and secondary sources to answer the compelling question “In what ways do Cold War perspectives compare across the globe?” Students initially answer three supporting questions provided by the teacher through evaluating sources. The supporting questions enable them to compare and contrast perspectives between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, study viewpoints of both citizens and world leaders during this time, and analyze propaganda posters for author bias and its impact. The lesson culminates with a summative performance task in which students answer the compelling question by doing a historiography while citing activity source examples. Additionally, the authors provide a suggested extension activity and methods for taking informed action.
