ABSTRACT

In this inquiry, learners investigate the ways in which the U.S. Constitution was influenced by global philosophies, events, and movements. Drawing from Renaissance, Enlightenment, and non-Western primary sources, participants analyze how the ideals of the U.S. Constitution can be found in other writings. Learners begin by watching a short video designed to spark debate about whether the United States continues to offer the “American Dream” symbolized by the Statue of Liberty. From there, students complete performance tasks that allow them to analyze selected primary and secondary sources. In responding to the unit’s compelling question, students apply their new learning to offer a critique of whether the United States is living up to its Enlightenment ideals. As an extension, students can explore how the U.S. Constitution continues to be an inspiration for governance by examining the United Nations Charter.
