ABSTRACT

This case explores the intersectionality of implicit bias and racial stereotyping and its impact on Students of Color through school dress code policies. The scenario illustrates a racial empathy gap resulting in Students of Color receiving disproportionately harsher penalties and punishments than their White peers. The phenomena that contribute to an empathy gap reflect the oppressive power that is pervasive in educational institutions. While this case explicitly discusses a “zero tolerance” dress code policy, the effect of systemic racial bias against Students of Color remains not only relevant, but an increasing school leadership concern. As a microcosm of the larger society, schools reflect deeply embedded and institutionalized beliefs that have historically marginalized Students of Color. Many school experiences based on the power behind racial biases negatively impact lifelong trajectories. Readers will critically analyze a myriad of perspectives on the institutional practices that influence the lives of students and families.
