ABSTRACT

This case discusses the importance of a nonprofit CEO to embrace a multi-frame perspective to be successful in navigating the challenges faced when leading a board of directors for an upcoming strategic planning process. A consultant demonstrates how Bolman and Deal’s four major frames – structural, human resource, political, and symbolic – can help a CEO increase her effectiveness. The consultant also provides training on Hersey and Blanchard’s Situation Leadership Model. The Situational Leadership Model is a practitioner-friendly theory that can help leaders learn to pivot their style based on a subordinate’s competence and commitment. Finally, the case illustrates principles for how to work effectively with a challenging client.
