ABSTRACT

The present work attempts to come up, using Gini Index (GI), with an inequality measure existing among the IT sector workers. Salary is used as the primary variable.

The result indicates a moderately high inequality. By critically analysing the GI we identified and zeroed in on the factors (experience, gender and company type) primarily responsible by using Factor Analysis. We further analysed the GI by Gini Decomposition Technique, and examined the within and the in-between and Residual factors. We found that in case of years of experience, the within component is very low whereas the in- between component is high. This indicates that salary inequality varies directly with Years of Experience. For the gender factor, we have seen that inequity exists within employees of same gender, probably because of differences in experience profile. But the inequity between male and female employees is not very significant. For the Company Type profile, we noted that workers with similar experience get similar amount across the industry. This translates to the absence of company performance component in the overall compensation package.

Regarding the Happiness aspect, the analysis revealed that there is a paradox between stress at work and happiness. As is exclaimed by an IT professional “We are Aliens in the society, neither earthquake shakes us nor drought depress us”. The present survey gives us an inference that there is a “Happiness Crisis in this Contemporary Society”. The Work Life balance has also changed drastically as a result of these factors and it 264emphasizes more on compensatory benefits. An analysis of the Penetration Index (PI) in the IT Sector and a comparison of PI for all Indian states reveal that the PI in the North Eastern states is the lowest in India. The study concludes that there is a serious threat to the established value system in India and this is in jeopardy.
