ABSTRACT
This chapter brings together key themes from the literatures on election debates and deliberative theory and practice. Rarely have the two literatures talked to one another, even though they might be regarded as two sides of the democratic coin. Debates are moments of dramatic spectacle. Deliberative events encourage calm reflection. This chapter asks whether there is democratic potential for reflective spectacle as well as spectacular reflection. It concludes by suggesting that democracy needs both.
