ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the use of multimedia technology as a teaching vehicle. Secondly, the strengths and limitations of using case studies for teaching in a higher education context are reviewed, and this evaluation is then used as the basis for considering the compatibility of the case study method and multimedia technology. The introduction of multimedia technology into the education process in higher education only provides an opportunity to reconsider teaching strategies to be adopted but also requires such a reconsideration. First, it is widely acknowledged that case studies can promote a deeper understanding, and secondly, in recent years there has been growing emphasis on teaching transferable skills, the development of which arguably may be aided through the use of the case study approach. The capabilities of multimedia technology have important implications when the use of the case study method is considered.
