ABSTRACT

The Armed Conflict Survey provides analysis and data on active armed conflicts involving states and non-state armed groups across the world. The Chart of Conflict, which was previously carried in The Military Balance, will henceforth be carried in The Armed Conflict Survey. Fatality statistics in The Armed Conflict Survey relate to military, insurgent and civilian lives lost as a direct result of armed conflict. Although multiple sources are consulted as part of our analytical process, refugee data used in The Armed Conflict Survey is sourced from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The term ‘returnee’ is applied to a refugee who has returned to his/her country after taking refuge in another country. Internally displaced persons are individuals or groups who have been forced or obliged to flee their homes as a result of, or in order to, avoid the effects of armed conflict, situations of generalised violence or violations of human rights.
