ABSTRACT

The freedom of scientific research, a basic principle essential for scientific inquiry, is undergoing considerable criticism in contemporary society. The development of the scientific outlook was not made without opposition from many quarters. Physics and astronomy were eventually vindicated by their demonstrated success in explaining a wide range of previously inexplicable phenomena. Many moralists a generation ago condemned physicists for their work on nuclear energy. The development of nuclear weapons, and their attendant capacity for the destruction of life on this planet, was attributed by some to a lack of social conscience. Geneticists have also been attacked by some groups for focusing on the hereditary factors in behavior and minimizing environmental conditions. Science is also criticized today by those who would reject its naturalistic or materialistic “world view.”The Commission therefore recommends that research be conducted, but only if certain restrictive standards are met.
