Carneiro is Associate Curator of South American Ethnology, American Museum of Natural History, New York. He has combined field studies among the Kuikuru and Amahuaca Indians of the Amazon Basin with an interest in the role of ecological factors in the rise of complex societies. More recently, he has applied Guttman scale analysis to the study of cultural evolution. He is co-editor of Essays in the Science of Culture and editor of Herbert Spencers The Evolution of Society.
