ABSTRACT

Professor Alice Ambrose made the telling point in the course of the discussion that whereas in science solutions are reached and agreement is achieved, metaphysical inquiry fails on both counts. As she said, people have been arguing on metaphysical problems for two thousand years without definitively solving anything. Professor Lazerowitz propounded the theory that metaphysics is but the conscious expression of prohibited unconscious wishes; thus, that it is not a rational enterprise. As a proof of his theory, one of the examples which he cited was F. H. Bradley’s absolute idealism. Professor Ambrose made the telling point in the course of the discussion that whereas in science solutions are reached and agreement is achieved, metaphysical inquiry fails on both counts. As she said, people have been arguing on metaphysical problems for two thousand years without definitively solving anything.
