ABSTRACT

Health is central to the pursuit of the overall development of human beings. It forms the foundation for economic and social development and therefore is an important indicator of a country’s strength and prosperity. The concept of promoting a ‘Healthy China’ in terms of policy support was first set forth at the fifth plenary session of the 18th Communist Party of China National Congress in October 2015. This chapter discusses a study conducted by the China Development Research Foundation in 2016 to study commercial health insurance in China. It explains that the 'Main report' was designed to review achievements made in commercial health insurance, identifies key challenges, and points to future directions and areas for further development. The study provides scientific backing and reference material to assist policymakers in making evidence-based decisions that promote the development of commercial health insurance in China. The report will contribute to improving China’s medical safeguards system, and achieving the goal of a Healthy China.
