ABSTRACT

In this final chapter of the book, we look back at what we have learned through our involvement in the Community sport for AT-risk youth: Innovative strategies for promoting personal development, health and social CoHesion (CATCH) project. Among other things, this relates to the extent to which the multidisciplinary character of the research team has affected the actual approach and outcomes of the project. We also reflect on the potential of community sport practice in Flanders for targeting selected social inclusion objectives in relation to young people in socially vulnerable situations. On the basis of our current understanding of what is essential for community sport organisations in that context, we have identified a number of issues we consider as relevant for these organisations and policymakers. These issues primarily relate to the expectations and ambitions that have been formulated regarding the social inclusion potential of community sport by policymakers, funders and many organisations themselves. We also look at the specific role and importance of sport within these practices and focus on the level of expertise of community sport coaches to target social inclusion objectives.
