ABSTRACT

The entire family system is affected when one member is diagnosed with a chronic medical condition. There are also specific challenges when the patient is a child or adolescent. This chapter discusses how practicing from the ORCA-Stance within the context of various relationships allows clinicians to maintain the delicate balance between the heightened concerns and involvement of caretakers with the individuation process and achievement of important developmental milestones in youth. A case study is explored and best practices suggested. This chapter shows how clinicians who use the ORCA-Stance can utilize their professional knowledge and personal experiences while still working collaboratively from a biopsychosocial perspective and maintaining cultural humility with patients.
