ABSTRACT

For a brief moment, we pull back the various layers to our life in this chapter to examine one in particular: race. We recount our tense experience navigating an international trip as a mixed-race couple. In this homogeneous European city, microaggressions and differences in power spilled into our partner dynamic. We reflect on this experience, and how it affects our relationship, using the ORCA-Stance, particularly focusing on accountability to power and curiosity. As narrative trained therapists, we sit with the tension of stories being complex and in progress – instead of simple and easily resolved – and as ORCA-Stance trained folks we resist the urge to grasp for power to tell a finished story.
