ABSTRACT

This chapter explores workplace culture and the style of leadership that contributes to a healthy and productive work environment. The author argues that the heathiest workplaces are those where employees feel respected and included in organizational development. The author takes the position that as the broader culture continues to move toward egalitarian relationships, those organizations that embrace elements of an ORCA-Stance find that their employees are more motivated to contribute, compared to a traditional top-down culture. Like all leaders, those in an ORCA-based work setting are concerned about profit and efficiency; however, they never lose sight of staff relationships, the value and abilities of their workers, and the importance of their employees as people. This posture requires cultural humility, a quality essential for the successful exercise of organization and leadership. Cultural humility involves remaining curious about the cultural background of the staff, learning about cultural differences, and remaining open to how the differences can be integrated as an asset for the workplace.
