ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses my journey both personally and conceptually to democratic ecosocialism, a term that I first employed with two colleagues in a medical anthropology textbook published in 1996 to envision a pathway to achieving a healthy world. Essentially, we conflated two earlier concepts – namely democratic socialism and ecosocialism – which I discuss briefly in this chapter. I delineate several radical transitional or system-challenging reforms not so much as a blueprint but as loose guidelines to move the world system from capitalism to democratic ecosocialism. I also highlight the importance of anti-systemic movements, including the climate justice movement, of which I have been a part since 2007, in facilitating this shift.
