ABSTRACT

Solar communism is a reconceptualization of Marx’s vision of communism for the twenty-first century, summed up in this revision of his aphorism: “From each according to her ability, to each according to her needs,” defining each and her as referring both to human beings and to nature (ecosystems). Solar energy can be the only energetic basis for a global communist civilization because of its abundant supply, the availability of efficient technologies for its implementation, compatibility even now with both decentralized and democratic management and control, and its potential to maximize biodiversity on our planet and minimize negative ecological/environmental and human health impacts. Confronting the challenge of dangerous climate change will require radical changes in global physical and political economies, specifically the timely creation of high-efficiency renewable energy infrastructure replacing fossil fuels and nuclear fission energy supplies, along with a shift to comprehensive social management of production and consumption in an ecosocialist transition from capitalist society.
