ABSTRACT

Is the Green New Deal a potential vehicle for revolutionary, ecosocialist aims? Or is it crisis Keynesianism designed to smooth the contradictions of climate-changing capitalism? This chapter considers the opportunities presented by the emergent politics of the Green New Deal for the wider dissemination and discussion of ecosocialist ideas and praxis. It calls for a strategic approach to the Green New Deal, one grounded in ecosocialist critique but not disarmed by it. Rather than foreclosing the political possibilities of the Green New Deal, ecosocialists can use this opportunity to contest types of “climate action” designed by and for capital.
