ABSTRACT

The relationship between the state and civil society is an important process that has shaped the politics and management of the environment in India. Environmental policymaking in India has been historically influenced by a diversity of approaches that are global and local. These approaches are embedded in institutional, social and political processes that have generated sometimes-contradictory impulses and models of conservation and development. The environment, being central to concerns of resource use for both state and society, has therefore been the centre of much negotiation.
