ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors outline the contemporary discussion regarding fan identity within the sport literature. Specifically, the authors explore multi-layered performance sport fan identity to demonstrate the complex and unstable nature of sport fandom. Relevant theory is outlined to support the presence of multiple layers of performative sport fandom and synthesize sport management literature that points to a holistic view (social, group, and individual level) sport fandom. The influence of individual narratives within the performance of sport fan identities is highlighted. The chapter concludes with suggestions for future research that address the complexity of the concepts presented.
