ABSTRACT

Dance is considered a unique form of art, as performers express messages through bodily movements (Martin, 1989). As a holistic activity, dance contributes towards embodied cognition with continual interactions between the body, mind and environment (Thompson, 2016). In this chapter, the authors present a case study on the effective use of Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) and Imagery to develop a performer in dance. Observations and informal interviews between the practitioner and performer were collected and analysed using thematic and interpretative phenomenological analysis. Threshold concepts (Meyer & Land, 2003) were identified for dance during this process. These included developing a sensory awareness, continual reflection on performance, influence of music to alter movement dynamics and individual experimentation.
