ABSTRACT

Existing research has suggested a number of factors, including growing markets at home and abroad, the increased poverty and desperation in countries where production occurs and the inefficiency of traditional strategies used to eradicate narco gangs. This chapter argues that one major factor in their success is the rapid adoption and creative exploitation of cutting-edge technologies. Narco gangs are present practically in all continents, consequently the drug war is no longer a restricted Mexican problem, but an international threat that has exacerbated crime and violence far beyond national borders. Fieldwork stands on the analysis of relevant cases covered by media online news, print press, television related to the use of information technologies, and the drug problem in Mexico. The success or failure of the upcoming security strategies related with the drug war in Mexico will depend on the effective harmonization of the legal framework, major investment in technology, and establishment of effective communication strategies to promote collaboration between the civil organizations and the government.
