ABSTRACT

Jim Short proudly and unapologetically declared himself a “Chicagoan,” a scholar whose work centered on a guiding principle of “The Chicago School” of sociology: that social facts only make sense situated within unique historical, ecological, and socioeconomic contexts. This chapter describes how Jim’s research embodies this “Chicago Insight” and, in so doing, has enriched our understanding of group processes, situational levels of explanation, and the study of crime and deviance more generally.
