Although many adults practice various types of power exchange, kink, and BDSM (bondage and discipline, domination and submission, and sadomasochism), many social work and human service professionals are unaware of what these activities and practices actually look like in the real world, and how they can support their clients who may be interested in this facet of sexuality. This chapter offers a cross section of the history of kink and BDSM, basic terminology, discussions around consent, challenges faced by those in this community, intersections of kink and BDSM with other groups and identities, and identifiable strengths of those practicing kink and BDSM. The authors then offer a variety of suggestions and opportunities on how to offer affirming practice to clients. Finally, the authors have included a sample kink/BDSM negotiation form that providers can use with clients as a jumping off point for some of these conversations, along with further resources.
