ABSTRACT

This chapter explores self-disclosure as a relational tool of therapeutic alliance. In addition, it reviews various forms of self-disclosure, positive and negative outcomes of self-disclosure, and factors contributing to the choice to use self-disclosure. The chapter begins with the author examining the context for self-disclosure as a transgender therapist, the way gender and ecological contexts impact self-disclosure, and implications in treatment. The author then specifically looks at their experience as a transgender therapist with their clients that are transgender, partners of transgender people, and parents of transgender children.
