ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter explores reasons why emancipatory perspectives on madness matter. Drawing from the work of Latin American liberation psychologist Martín-Baró, the author discusses what constitutes an emancipatory paradigm, including theories which emphasize historicism, nonpositivistic, and collectivistic forms of knowledge. The importance of emancipatory perspectives across three broad areas are discussed: personal wellness, cultural pluralism, and collective transformation.
