ABSTRACT

This is a case study of one university library’s attempt to implement the new USMARC Format for Holdings and Locations as part of a locally developed, single-institution serials control system. It does not describe how to perform a pure implementation of the holdings format. Instead it shows the interaction of national standards with local needs, of almost unlimited demands with local constraints, of new content designation with old data, and of the desire for conformity to the format with the necessity of creating a working system in a given amount of time.
