ABSTRACT

The University of Florida Libraries have had a long history of involvement with serial conversion projects. As early as 1975, Florida was bibliographically converting serials on OCLC for the Florida Union List of Serials (FULS). When funding ended for the FULS project, the University of Florida’s Catalog Department was designated as a CONSER participant and FUG began appearing in claimed records on OCLC in 1977. Current cataloging was submitted for CONSER authentication at the Library of Congress and it was not until 1981 that serials retrospective conversion of Florida records began in earnest. In the fall of 1981, the University of Florida, along with the other Southeastern libraries awarded the Department of Education Title II-C grant, began an intensive bibliographic serials conversion project of currently received titles. Most libraries completed the bulk of their conversion over the period of one year. Particularly rewarding to the serials catalogers at Florida was the high percentage of CONSER records available for currently published titles. It was a recognition of the impact CONSER had had on the national bibliographic databases.
