ABSTRACT

Since the turn of the twenty-first century, Norwegian public television (NRK) has broadcast a variety of documentary series targeting children and young adults and starring independent girl-adventurers exploring Arctic landscapes. The legitimation for these documentaries is NRK’s mandate – approved by Parliament in 2017 – to foster principles of democracy, freedom of speech and socio-geographical and cultural diversity. This chapter examines how four of these documentaries contribute to revising the conventional male-centred Arctic adventure discourse by displaying the Arctic as a space that is accessible to women and girls, regardless of their age.
