ABSTRACT

Over the course of many centuries, diverse cultures have used cannabis and cannabis extracts as medicine. Yet, the current sociopolitical landscape in the United States reflects tensions arising from legal gray areas, federal prohibitions, and stigmas associated with cannabis use. Despite prohibitions and controversies, human service professionals are encountering growing numbers of clients actively using, or seeking to use, cannabis as medicine. Education on both the pros and cons of medical cannabis use is also essential for human service professionals so they may provide appropriate services and care. Human service professionals must ask themselves how they can be best prepared and best informed to competently support and advise clients when it comes to cannabinoid therapy use. The core values of human service professions are based on service, social justice, and the dignity and worth of the individual and human relationships.
