Introduction

This volume was tackled in response to three recent events: the publication in the Federal Register of regulations on educational effectiveness, the nation-wide recession affecting library services at all types of libraries and the publication of both Sharon Baker’s and F. Wilfrid Lancaster’s Measurement and Evaluation of Library Services (2d ed.) and ACRL’s Measuring Academic Library Performance by Nancy Van House, Beth Weil and Charles McClure.
