ABSTRACT

How overdues are dealt with in an academic library often depends on which group of borrowers is involved. For student borrowers, reducing overdues requires an appropriate loan period (including study carrels for graduate students) and certain punitive measures, such as fines, revoking borrowing privileges, or blocking students from registering. Faculty and staff overdues are more difficult to resolve, and individual cases may be very time-consuming. Outside borrowers can be dealt with in traditional ways (fines, revoked privileges), but serious problems can develop.
