ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on observation in the mathematics classroom, considering how to support a beginning teacher to learn from observation and how to observe them in a way that supports their development and enables them to grow as a teacher of mathematics. When a focus has been identified, the beginning teacher needs to consider how they are going to record their observations and choose an approach that enables them to keep their attention on the aspect of teaching they are interested in. The post-lesson discussion focuses solely on the mathematics enabling a professional dialogue that explores the mathematical knowledge the teacher drew on at the planning stage and within the lesson, the decisions made about the design of the lesson and the order of the mathematics through the lesson. The beginning teacher should then plan for the learning conversation, creating an agenda and providing resources to support conversation which could include: the lesson plan, the video clips and relevant resources.
