ABSTRACT

Amidst the myriad of requirements and expectations of the modern-day teacher, and despite the ever-changing educational landscape, no single word continues to inspire more regular dread within educators as the A-word – assessment. Black and Wiliam have been writing for over twenty years about assessment. Finally, in terms of formative assessment, providing opportunities for pupils to assess their own, and others’, work via peer- and self-assessment, potentially linked to shared learning outcomes, is an important part of developing pupils’ understanding. Throughout much of the research is the drive for feedback which is constructive and challenging and helps pupils move forward. The importance of reflection and improvement time in lessons, ensuring pupils engage with feedback and take some responsibility for their own progress. The benefits, and challenges, of using data appropriately and effectively to inform future planning and aid pupil progress.
